I Believe in Movies by James Kargle
Movies can have many different effects on people. Obviously, different movies create different effects. Most movies are made to entertain, but most of these also have other puposes. Some educate, others motivate. Some movies even inspire. Some movies do all of these things at the same time. I believe in movies.
Movies entertain us in several ways. Some are funny and make you laugh. Some have special effects that we all like to see, and some movies just have good plots, good story lines, and good acting, and that is what entertains us. Now, I'm not saying that all movies that are supposed to entertain us actually do entertain everybody. But even movies that you and/or I don't like get the job of entertaining done to somebody.
Movies that educate us use several different methods to do so. Some of these are those boring movies that you can order from Iowa Public Television or someplace like that. These are the movies that just show historical pictures and Morgan Freeman narrates the whole thing. It used to be Walter Cronkite, but he is no longer with us. I'd prefer movies that have good and/or decent actors to reenact historical events. An example of this type of educational film is Nuremburg, starring Alec Baldwin and Brian Cox.
Movies that inspire us are, for me, movies that are about semi-recent events such as Black Hawk Down. Whenever I watch this movie, it makes me want to join the military, or do something that will not only affect me, affect others. Many others. Some people get this feeling when they watch movies about sports. It may not be the same affect but it does make them want to play that same, or a different sport.
Movies have several effects on us. No matter what that effect is, we enjoy it. Even sad movies. I watch movies for all of these effects. I get inspired by them, they make me laugh, and some educate me about one thing or another. The point is, movies are a release for people whenever they need one. The next time you're having a bad day, go home and put on your favorite movie just to see how it affects you for the rest of your day. I bet it helps more than you think it will. I believe in movies.
