I Believe in Dancing by Hannah Mullally
I still remember the day that I first put on my little pink ballet slippers. I was in Kindergarten and couldn't wait to go to my first dance lesson at Shelly's School of Dance. I always imagined myself becoming a ballerina like the ones I had seen in the Nutcracker. I've been dancing ever since, and I'll keep it up for quite awhile. I believe in dancing.
Dancing lets you express yourself in a way that you can't in words. If you watch a dance, you may be able to tell what kind of mood the dancer is in. Many times they show this by their posture, the types of moves they do, or the speed of the dance. There are many times that I've looked to dance to relieve stress. It allows me to focus my mind on one thing and put everything else away. When I get into a dance, it's almost like no one else is in the room, or at least I don't care if anyone is watching me.
While it is encouraged to let your personality shine through in dance, I have learned discipline from it. There are some types, including ballet and pointe, which require you to master a technique. This includes the big things like which arm is in what position, or it could be something small like slightly tilting you head or the pointing of a foot. During these dances, all of the dancers should look almost identical. When the dancers in my class do these types of dances, we try to think of ourselves as a group first and as individuals second.
There are so many types of dancing. There is one kind I have always wanted to learn. Tango! I love to watch couples dance the tango because it is such a beautiful dance. It is interesting because each pair puts their own unique flair into it, but there are always the basic core steps that they rely on. One of my favorite types of dancing that I can do is jazz. Jazz is usually a fast paced dance with a lot of twists, turns and leaps. Jazz and modern (which is a type of dance very close to jazz) also give you the chance to dance to you favorite songs.
I have been taking dance lessons for a pretty long time and it has yet to get old. In every day and dance there is something new and challenging that comes up. Just like anything else, you always have to give dance your all. You may feel like you've failed at times (believe me, I know from experience) but if you try harder or put more effort into practice, you will always succeed. While there are many types of choreographed dances, I feel the best kind of dance there is, is the kind that everyone does by themselves. Whether you don't think you're very high up on the talent scale, or if you think you were born to be in the New York Ballet, dancing is for everyone and makes everyone happy. So go ahead, the next time you're home alone, pop in a CD and jam out. There's no age limit for dancing and everyone can do it. You may surprise yourself! I believe in dancing.
