This I Believe: Gay Marriage by Bethany Rexus
As I sat and thought about the topic before me, I thought "What do I really believe in..truly..whole heartedly..something that I really have an opinion toward..?" I first thought..music? Family? Friends? Sure. I believe in those things. But so deos everyone else...and as I thought longer it comes to me. Now I know its a contraversal subject and I may or may not offend some people in this room with my belief..but this is how I feel..and I'm going to express my beliefs, on gay marriage.
I believe in this controversial subject, because I believe in love. I believe that everyone on this earth has a soul mate and when you find them, weather they be the opposite or same sex as you, you deserve to be with them, if you love someone and they love you to, no one should have the nerve to tell you whether its right or wrong. Whether you can be together or not, and whether you can share your lives together or not. Now I know some of you that may be familiar with the subject are thinking, what a bout a "Domestic Partnership" ? Isn't that the same thing? I answer this question with a big fat NO domestic partnership is not the same thing as marriage, it has some what the same principal but when it comes down to it, part of the reason people get married is to get some marital benefits, and with a Domestic Partnership gay couples get cheated out of 1,138 right where married couples qualify. I can hardly call that equal.
Most people are against gay marriage because of it being against certain religions, not all, but a few certain religions. Also, thinking of religion, the constitution mentions the seperation of Church and State, yet many people vot in the state, because of only religion, which is going against the constitution.
Another common misconception that strays people away form this subject is the stereotype that gays are promiscuous, unable to form lasting relationships, and the relationships that do form are shallow and uncommitted. And gays do have such relationships! But the inportant fact to note is that just like in straight society, where such relationships ALSO exist, they are a small minority, and exist primarily among the very young.
Now, I am friend with several gay and bi-sexual people, and them and there partners are as out in the open as any heterosexual couple, because they are comfortable with who they are and who they love..some people may think it gross or unpropper to see a gay couple holding hands down the street or kissing in a movie theater, but arnt these normal and natural things that straight couples do all the time? People don't choose to be gay, they are born gay...or bi-sexual..just like other people are born straight, its not a choice, its nature..how many people will tell you that there child came up to them one day and said "Mom, I've thought long and hard about this and I've decided that I'm straight" they don't..because you don't choose your sexuality, you are born with it. Just like everyone is born with the yerning for love, and companionship, weather you be male or female, straight or gay. This is why, I believe in gay marriage.
