I Believe that the Bird is the Word by Evan Reeder
Everybody knows that the Bird is the word. It's more than a catchy one hit wonder from the sixties, or the premise of an episode of Family Guy, it's a cultural reference that spans generations. You can go up to almost anyone and ask them what the word is, and most of the time they will answer simply: Bird or The Bird is the Word. I believe that the Bird is the word.
An American rock band called the Trashmen combined two rhythm and blues songs in 1963 to make the hit Surfin' Bird which is arguably one of the most memorable songs to ever come out on vinyl or for that matter to ever be released in any medium. I personally think they came up with one of the greatest hits of all time. It has a certain style not heard in music today, yet it is just as popular as it was back in the day.
One of the many reasons for this is the songs popularity is it's simplicity. The only real sentence to the song is "The Bird is the Word" other than that it's just made up nonsense. In fact an appealing part of the song is you can start listening at any point and begin singing until the end of the song and not miss any important point. Another reason this song is such an appealing one is because it's just silly and fun. The second half is just made up nonsense words and mouth noises. These are just a few of the many reasons that show how the Bird is the Word but how this song has become a staple in our society.
As I mentioned earlier Surfin' Bird played a main role in the plot of more than one episode of Family Guy, but these are not the only instances of it's cultural significance. In a way the song puts it best when it states that "Everybody's talking about the Bird!" When I started writing this I asked a few of my classmates what the word was and almost all of them answered: Bird. You could do this almost anywhere and get the same result. The song has been featured in many movies and television shows including but not limited to Full Metal Jacket, Fred Claus, and Back to the Beach. There have also been countless covers through the years.
In conclusion there have been many songs written, and this is one of the. However this is one of the most popular songs of all time. It has spanned generations and I believe it will continue to do so. If you were to ask someone what the word is chances are they will respond with Bird. This isn't a coincidence, but a result of people realizing a catchy song when they hear one. From a humble beginning to becoming one of the most popular and recognizable songs of all time I believe that the Bird is the Word.
